After hosting triathletes from around the globe for 21 consecutive years, Tempe will welcome athletes to its final IRONMAN Arizona event on November 16, 2025. Moreover, this marks the end of an era for one of North America’s most beloved triathlon destinations.
The decision to conclude the race stems from ongoing construction and development along portions of the 112-mile bike course, which has made finding viable routing increasingly challenging. Additionally, rapid growth throughout the East Valley has further complicated course logistics.
Keats McGonigal, Senior Vice President for The IRONMAN Group’s North American operations, emphasized that Tempe has become “one of the most popular race destinations on the global IRONMAN circuit”. Furthermore, the partnership between IRONMAN, Tempe city officials, Tempe Tourism, and the Salt River Pima Maricopa Indian Community created this iconic desert racing experience.
Since debuting in 2005, the Tempe triathlon has earned recognition as a premier racing venue. Specifically, the 2024 IRONMAN Athletes’ Choice Awards ranked it as North America’s third-best race and third-best run course. Athletes particularly appreciate the flat, fast course that’s ideal for setting personal records.
Michael Martin, President and CEO of Tempe Tourism, noted that “the IRONMAN Arizona triathlon has introduced countless athletes and spectators to Tempe”. The event has become synonymous with the city’s welcoming atmosphere and stunning desert scenery.
Tempe Mayor Corey Woods highlighted the community aspect, stating that “IRONMAN racing is truly a community, and Tempe has been honored to welcome countless athletes, spectators and volunteers from all over the world”. Indeed, the race has brought international recognition to this Arizona city.
The course features a single-loop swim in Tempe Town Lake, followed by the challenging bike route through desert landscapes. Subsequently, athletes complete a spectator-friendly run around the lake and through Papago Park.
Registration for the final race starts at $1,029.01 and includes race gear, finisher medals, shirts, hats, course nutrition, and post-race food. Athletes can still register through the official IRONMAN website.
