Family Day at Commemorative Air Force Museum

The Airbase Arizona Flying Museum, a unit of the Commemorative Air Force, has operated from historic Falcon Field in Mesa, Arizona for over 40 years providing inspiring and educational experiences to young and old.

Its annual aircraft touring programs, living history flights and its top-rated exhibition museum in Mesa, Arizona are available to the public year-round.

Its mission is to “Educate – Inspire – and Honor,” through its many programs of flight and living history experiences. Airbase Arizona is a not-for-profit educational organization, designated Blue Star Family Museum and is affiliated with the Smithsonian.

This Saturday (July 3d) take an exciting trip through 100 years of military aviation immersed in inspiring and educational programs. Family Day will be occurring the first Saturday of every month through September at the Airbase Arizona Flying Museum located in Mesa.

The special Family Day runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with reduced admission and activities for young and old. Adult admission that day is $5 per person or $10 for a family group of four (children age 5 and under are free). The special activities offered include:

  • Kids Adventure Hunt (ages 11 and under) – apply reading and recognition skills like a detective to solve eight mini-mysteries. Handout available all day.
  • Hidden Treasures Tour (all ages) – get the inside scoop on many unique military artifacts and little-known stories from the side-bars of history, and found in the exhibits at Airbase Arizona. Tour takes about 30 minutes and is offered at 11 am and 2 pm.
  • Fly a Balsa or Foam Airplane (ages 11 and under) – Our activity area will be open for supervised flying of toy aircraft. One will be provided or bring your own design (wing span no larger than 20 inches).
  • Tommy Tailspin – 1930s Vintage Movie Serial (all ages) – Follow the exploits of young aviation entrepreneurs and the evil crooks who try to stop them. Showing all day in video seating area on museum floor.

Featured Warbird for July 3d is the C-47 ‘Old Number 30’. This actual combat veteran flew airborne troops in the invasion of Sicily, spy, mule (yes MULE!) and supply drops in the Balkan Campaign — then left military service in 1946 to become an airliner and then an executive aircraft.
