The Museum of Northern Arizona will celebrate Mexican and Mexican-American traditions during its 22nd Annual Celebraciones de la Gente this weekend. Meanwhile, families throughout Flagstaff can experience authentic Día de los Muertos customs. Additionally, the two-day festival offers cultural performances and educational activities.

The partnership between the museum and Flagstaff Nuestras Raíces brings this meaningful celebration to northern Arizona. Furthermore, the event honors the spirit of Día de los Muertos with heartfelt remembrances and joyful festivities. Moreover, visitors can explore colorful memorial altars called ofrendas throughout the weekend.

The brightly adorned ofrendas in the museum’s Jaime Major Golightly Courtyard serve as the festival’s centerpiece. Each altar tells the story of families and loved ones. Subsequently, traditional marigold flowers create scented pathways for returning spirits.

Cultural performances will highlight authentic Mexican traditions. Additionally, Mariachi music fills the courtyard during afternoon hours. Children can also participate in sugar skull decorating workshops. Furthermore, face painting stations operate throughout both days.

As evening approaches on Saturday, the Courtyard After Dark program begins. Consequently, candlelit ofrendas create a magical atmosphere under Flagstaff’s starry sky. Traditional Mexican sweets and warm beverages are available during this special evening program.

Food vendors throughout the festival grounds offer authentic Mexican cuisine. Therefore, families can enjoy traditional dishes while experiencing the cultural celebration. The Museum of Northern Arizona provides the perfect backdrop for this meaningful weekend in Flagstaff.
